Taking Ownership

What does it mean to take ownership?  Is it going the extra mile?  Or being proactive?  Or correcting something that’s wrong even when it’s not your responsibility to do so?  Some people might say it’s all of the above.  But however you interpret it, owning up to a job or project that needs to be completed might in fact make you a better person.  Taking ownership of your everyday surroundings is important.

When I walk down the sidewalk leading to my house, I pick up garbage along the road.  Even though I didn’t litter, nor might the trash be directly in front of my house, I put the larger picture into perspective.  This is still my neighborhood and picking up trash in my community makes me feel like I’m a part of – I have a vested interest in the beautification of my area and it makes me feel like a better person for doing so.

Taking ownership at your job is also important.  In his book, How to Become CEO, Jeffrey J. Fox writes a chapter called “Be a Flag-Waving Company Patriot.”  More than feeling good about yourself, taking ownership on your job has many other perks that include money, promotions, vacations, more leeway, etc.  Think about ways you can personalize your company’s culture and then add to it.

Ownership initiatives require viewing the bigger picture of any job, project or task.  When I made a decision to own up to more responsibilities in my life, I gained a better understanding of how my individual role mattered in life and how my contributions made my surroundings a better place.  And taking ownership is contagious.  When others see your positive attitude and how proactive you have become, many will mimic your actions.  So commit right now to a better, more productive you.  Bookmark this article…or better still, be proactive and share it with a friend.
